How to achieve loyalty and hard work from your employees

Your business and the employees are more than just a group of people working together. They’re not just a company. If you run your business correctly, it can be a functioning family. There are great rewards to reap if you do this. By running your business as a family, everyone feels connected, and they want to help one another. That means they won’t just leave another member of the family stranded in trouble. They’ll help them, and this will strengthen your business model as a whole. Everyone will be working towards the same goal of making the business a success.

You might think this is true for every company, but it isn’t. If you don’t look after employees and treat them like family, they’re not working for your business. Instead, they are working purely for the paycheck. It would be naive to assume that when employees are happy they forget all about the money. But they are not just working hard to earn their pay. They are working hard because they want your business to succeed. This is the type of loyalty you want to strive for. The question is, how do you achieve it.

Open Your Door

Once a month or as often as you can, you should be checking in with employees. You need to make sure that their opinions and their concerns about the business are being heard. The worst thing you can do is run a business where employees feel like they don’t have a voice or say in how it operates. At that point, they are just a cog in the system rather than an individual. They’ll still work for you, but many will ultimately give the bare minimum. If you don’t treat them like part of the team, they won’t act like one. For many business owners, it’s going to be difficult to find the time to do this. But you should aim to speak to your employees, at the very least, once a year. Check in on them and you might be surprised with some of the ideas they have to help you improve the company.

Keep Checks And Assess

You need to make sure that your work environment and the office is healthy. We’re not just talking about physical health, although that might be the best place to start. As a business owner, you do have a duty of care to your employees. You can not just let them look after their own health, particularly while they are at work. If you do this, you could open yourself to a lawsuit. But that’s not the only reason you need to take care of them. You need to make them feel like they are appreciated. An example of this would be breaks between typing. Experts recommend that typists take five minutes every hour to avoid RSI. You should be ensuring employees in your business take their breaks. If they don’t, you are failing to be a caring, compassionate, employer.

Obviously, not all business owners are going to have time to look after employees. Even managers won’t have the time through the day to do this. If you find yourself in this situation, you can still keep the office healthy. With a Health Assured CISM programme, employees will be monitored, and any issues will be dealt with if and when they arrive. Since the business is providing this service, employees will still feel taken care of.

Rewards

You should be looking into rewarding employees for great work. To do this, you may want to set up some paychecks that are at-risk. A partially at-risk paycheck may not sound like a reward, but it is. It’s an incentive to work harder for the business. If employees match certain goals, they will reach higher levels of pay. Alternatively, you can introduce increased pay levels regardless of work quality. For instance, Christmas bonuses may be appreciated, if these fit into your business budget. Smaller companies will no doubt struggle to provide these types of rewards.

More Than Just Work

That’s why they should instead focus on allowing employees to socialise. By doing this, employees aren’t just treated as part of a family; they feel like one. Schemes such as casual, Fridays have this effect and so do office parties. We’re not just talking about the typical office Christmas Party. You should consider arranging weekend events for office workers where you can all come together. Even if these are in the form of team building exercises, they will be appreciated.

Treat your employees like they are part of a family and they’ll stick together, working through any business problems.
